NewsDOUGLAS ALWARD CaputredThe Colorado Department of Corrections confirmed at 12:00 P.M. that escaped inmate DOUGLAS ALWARD #45716 has been captured and is in custody of the Colorado Department of Corrections.
Colorado Department of Corrections Escape Team members with canine units, Special Operation Response Teams and investigators along with local law enforcement apprehended the escapee in a modular home near Yuma, Colorado. CDOC Special Operations Response Team personnel surrounded the home and Alward surrendered without incident.
Britt Colon Grand Champion Artist for Harvest Fest CompetitionBritt Colon, 4th generation resident of Canon City, won the Grand Champion award for the 2010 Harvest Fest Art Poster & Label Competition held by The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey in Canon City. "Britt's bold oil painting of grapes and her use of vivid fall colors is going to make the most wonderful harvest poster and wine label", said Sally Davidson, the competition organizer. "We are in absolute awe of her work."
First place runner up went to Ingrid Dittrich, a recent transplant to Canon City from Bogota, Columbia.
Candidates Forum to be HeldThe Canon City Chamber of Commerce will be hosting two candidates’ forums on Tuesday July 13th and Thursday the 22nd at the City Hall Council Chambers starting at 6:00 pm both nights.
The July 13th forum will be candidates running for state house and senate seats in our districts.
The July 22nd forum will be candidates running for local offices such as county commissioner, clerk & recorder, assessor, sheriff, and treasurer.
Farm Bureau Holds Annual Candidates NightFremont/Custer County Farm Bureau is holding the annual candidates night on July 12th, at the Canterbury ranch in Penrose. All those seeking public office, for our area, starting at the local level and going to the national level have been sent invitations and have been requested to attend. The evening will start at 6:30pm and will beheld at 502 4th Street in Penrose. Refreshments will be furnished by Farm Bureau. The public is invited to attend as well as all Farm Bureau Members.
Stage 2 FIRE BAN InformationTwo areas where the Stage 2 fire ban imposes tougher restrictions are bans on outdoor smoking and use of charcoal grills.
The complete list of Stage 2 fire ban restrictions prohibit:
1. Open fires or campfires;
2. Outdoor smoking except within an enclosed vehicle or building, at a developed recreation site, or within a designated smoking area with an approved container for discarding cigarette butts;
3. Use and/or discharge of any fireworks or pyrotechnic device;
4. Use of explosives;
5. Welding and grinding except when done with proper distance from combustibles and with proper fire p
GED Preparation ClassesThe Upper Arkansas Area Council of Governments/Fremont County Head Start program, in collaboration with the South Central Board of Cooperative Education Services will be conducting GED Preparation classes throughout the summer months. The GED preparation class currently has openings. Classes are held on Monday and Wednesday evenings, 4:00pm to 7:00pm at no charge to the student. Students must be at least 17 years old or have obtained an age waiver from the Colorado Dept. of Education.
