Canon City School District Will Turn Junk Into Jobs

The Canon City School District has just launched an electronics recycling program as a way to create jobs for students with disabilities.  The program provides residents and businesses with a convenient and ongoing drop off point for all of their unwanted electronics.  The Canon City School District will soon begin de-manufacturing and separating some of the collected material using a work team comprised of individuals with autism and other types of disabilities.

CPR Red Cross First Aid Class Coming Up

The Fremont County Public Health Agency hosts the first in a series of monthly CPR and First Aid training classes this Thursday, January 12th.    You can enroll for a half day of training for either CPR or First Aid at a cost of $37 for each class.    Or you can attend for the full day and receive both CPR and First Aid training at a cost of $55 for the combined class.    Class fees include all instructional materials and receipt of your CPR-First Aid certification cards upon successful completion of the training.

Model Rocket Program Scheduled

The Pueblo Weisbrod Aircraft Museum, Southern Colorado Rocketeers and the Canon City Recreation and Park District are pleased to present a model rocket program.  There will be a model rocket building and flying session  for families in Fremont County on Saturday, January 28th.  The building of the rockets will be held in the Community Room at the Recreation District office at 575 Ash.  Once the rockets are built, they will be launched at Pathfinder Park on Highway 115 between Canon City and Florence.  Building will begin at 10 AM with the launch at noon.  The rockets are free and the motors to fly are $2 a piece or a pack of 3 for $6.  If you are interested, please contact Jason Unwin at 671-2407 or the Recreation District at 275-1578.

Boys and Girls Club of Fremont County Becomes Chartered By National Organization

It is with pride and excitement that the Boys and Girls Club of Fremont County announces that it has officially become chartered by its national organization, Boys and Girls Club of America. 

This is the culmination of much hard work by many people, and they’re very excited and pleased to finally say, “we’re now an officially recognized Boys and Girls Club.”  They have had the permission of the national organization since August of 2009 to use the name, service mark, and publicity materials and to have the support of BGCA’s Regional Service Director for this area.  That allowed them to begin the process to form a non-profit, elect a board, raise money, begin to look for a building and eventually open their doors in June of 2011.

Ed Norden Announces Intention to Run For Re-Election For District 3 Fremont County Commissioner Seat

On Tuesday, December 20th, Ed Norden announced his intention to run for re-election to the District 3 Fremont County Commissioner  seat as a Republican candidate

Norden said, "I believe we have made some positive achievements over the past seven years, not only as the Board of Commissioners, but particularly working hand in hand with the other elected officials, department heads, and all county employees." 

Norden notes that in the midst of one of the most difficult fiscal periods   in state and local government in decades, the Board of Commissioners has worked to reduce staffing levels and to streamline the delivery of services while still emphasizing the importance of maintaining a level of service to the citizens of Fremont County.

Colorado Employment Situation November 2011

Nonfarm payroll jobs in Coloradodecreased by 4,500 from October to November to 2,247,600 jobs, according to the survey of business establishments. Government declined by 1,600 payroll jobs and the private sector declined by 2,900.

According to the survey of households, the unemployment rate decreased one-tenth of a percentage point to 8.0 percent. The number of people actively participating in the labor force increased 17,600 to 2,715,200 and total employment increased 21,100 to 2,499,000 causing the number of unemployed to decline 3,500. The national unemployment rate declined four-tenths of one percentage point over the same period to 8.6 percent.

Over the year, the average workweek for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls decreased from 34.5 to 34.4 hours and average hourly earnings increased from $23.86 to $24.19.

Canon City Chamber Accepting Nominations For Distinguished Citizen Award

Forms are now available for the residents of Fremont County to nominate someone who they feel should be awarded the “Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award.”  This person will be recognized at the Canon City Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting to be held December 12th at the Abbey Event Center.  Residents should put on their thinking caps and come up with a nominee who has made outstanding contributions in Fremont County in such areas as Community Service, Cultural Activities, Recreation, Civic Service, Youth Work, Religious Activities, Community Promotion, ETC.  The nominee must be a resident of Fremont County and can be nominated posthumously.  You may nominate as many people as you feel are qualified.  All nominations must be recieved at the Chamber office on or before January 6th at 5 p.m.  Nominations become property of the “Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award” committee.  This award is very prestigious and

Department Of Corrections Reports Sewage Spill

On Tuesday, December 13, 2011 the Department of Corrections (DOC) and Fremont Sanitation District discovered a sewer line blockage on the East Canon City Prison Complex in Canon City, Colorado. The blockage backed up raw sewage causing it to spill into a waste water lagoon which was no longer utilized. The spill then flowed into a creek which empties into the Arkansas River. The Department of Corrections immediately responded and stopped the flow of sewage and notified the Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE).  It has been determined the blockage occurred between 7 and 8 a.m. Sunday, December 11, 2011.

Cotter Plans To Terminate Its Canon City Uranium Mill Radioactive Materials License

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment announced today Cotter Corp. has notified the department of its decision to terminate its Cañon City Uranium Mill radioactive materials license.

The current license expires Jan. 31, 2012, and Cotter was faced with submitting a renewal application 30 days prior to that expiration date. Instead, Cotter now must submit a decommissioning plan and schedule as defined in the regulations.

“This is good news for the Cañon City community,” Gov. John Hickenlooper said. “We appreciate Cotter Corp.’s containment and cleanup efforts and look forward to the company’s continued involved in the community as remediation and decommissioning activities occur over the next 10 to 15 years.”
